Is It Really Over?

One of the Boston Marathon bombers was killed early this morning. A second bomber was captured this evening, and the sense of relief here in the Boston area is palpable. I've been listening to these events unfold over the course of the day, and at this moment, I'm listening to people celebrating over the radio. I understand they are celebrating mostly out of a sense of relief that this senseless violence is ending, but I just don't feel like celebrating. These events have just been too sad and tragic.

People have been killed, and grievously wounded. Many lives have been shattered. Are we ever going to understand what causes people do these things, and how we can help them before they reach the point of wanting to lash out? I don't think this is over, I thinks it's time to start asking hard and maybe painful questions.

Boston Marathon Bombing

I live in the greater Boston area, and for some reason this year I was hardly paying any attention to the race. I've been too caught up with work and other problems. As a result, I didn't even attempt to view the race, follow the reports of who won or how fast they ran. Later on, I suddenly got a news flash email from NPR around 3:20 PM about the bombings, and I've been trying to follow the news updates since then. So far 3 are dead and over 100 people have been injured, but details are still very sketchy.

Let's send out our best wishes to the victims, their families, and their friends.

If you are trying to find or pass on information here are numbers and links I found via google.

My Dilemma

As someone interested in running technique, when I see people running, I can't help myself from checking out their technique. Because of this, I often find myself facing the dilemma of whether or not to speak up when I see someone who's an injury waiting to happen.

Here are two types of runners, I see almost daily.

The Clueless Person in Vibrams -I see a lot of people running in Vibrams. Unfortunately the vast majority of them are heel striking. Also, many of them are such pronounced heel strikers that just watching them makes my knees hurt.

The Shuffler - I commonly see people "running" by swinging their legs like pendulums, only bending their knees just enough to prevent their feet from scraping the ground. They end up landing straight legged, and way out in front of their center of gravity.

Okay, should I say something or just let it go? I've always thought, based on my experiences, that most people would either shrug off my advice, and might even be offended by my critique. However, I can't help but feel a little guilty when I don't say anything. Most of these people will either end up with a running injury, and/or have to give running due to pain.

I'd like to hear the opinions of others. Should I speak up? Would people generally be open to my advice, or would they be put off by it? Is it likely to make a difference, or would it just end up making me "that guy"?
