Can a Lifetime in Shoes Make Converting to Barefoot Running Impossible?

There was an interesting discussion on The Science of Sport blog on barefoot running and injuries. The idea was brought up that after spending a lifetime in shoes some people may not be able to convert to barefoot running. If someone spends their life in shoes, could the development of their feet be affected so much that regular barefoot training becomes impossible? I found this notion intriguing. I don't know if it's true, but it is certainly plausible.

I've been continuing my experiment with barefoot running, and so far my experiences seems to be very typical for someone who starts barefoot training using the commonly recommended methods. Would anyone out there like to share their barefoot running experiences?
